Microdermabrasion FAQs
What is microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is a nonsurgical procedure which can repair sun- and age-damaged facial skin, providing the skin with a fresh, healthy-looking glow. The procedure can effectively reduce the appearance of fine lines and superficial wrinkles, crow's feet, age spots, acne scars, and blemishes caused by sun damage. Microdermabrasion also stimulated the production of new skin cells. More than one treatment is typically needed.
Who is the best candidate for microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion tends to be most effective on individuals with acne prone and blotchy skin, keratoses, large pores, milia, rhytides, sebaceous hyperplasia or small scars. It can also be effective on those with sun damaged or uneven skin. Microdermabrasion should not be performed on individuals with active or weeping acne, active Rosacea, auto-immune disorders, recent herpes outbreaks, undiagnosed lesions, unstable diabetes, or warts, or on patients who have recently undergone laser surgery or a chemical peel
or those who regularly use Retin A.
Is anesthesia used during microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion typically does not require anesthesia.
How is the actual microdermabrasion procedure performed?
The surgeon will use a device or handpiece which emits tiny crystals onto the surface of the skin, providing a gentle abrasion of the skin and removing the dead, outer layer of skin. After the procedure, toner, moisturizer and sunscreen may be applied to the skin.
How long does the actual microdermabrasion procedure last?
Microdermabrasion typically takes between thirty minutes and an hour to complete. Multiple sessions are typically required, ranging anywhere from five to twelve sessions spaced two to three weeks apart.
Is microdermabrasion a painful procedure?
Microdermabrasion is generally not a painful procedure. Some patients may experience a slight stinging around the eye area, and other patients describe feelings similar to slight windburn. The skin may feel slightly hot for the first day after the procedure.
What is the recovery like after microdermabrasion?
There are virtually no side effects after a microdermabrasion procedure, though the skin may feel slightly hot or flushed for the first day. The skin may also appear somewhat red right after treatment, though this tends to fade within a few hours. Normal activities can typically be resumed right after the procedure, though patients will need to avoid sun exposure for approximately seven days.
Will I need to take time off from work after undergoing microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion involves virtually no recovery time and no discomfort. As such, normal activities and work can typically be resumed right away, though sun exposure should be avoided for seven days.
Are there any risks or complications associated with microdermabrasion?
Though rare, the potential complications that can occur with microdermabrasion may include bleeding, infection, hyperpigmentation and perforation.
How much does microdermabrasion cost?
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the average surgeon/physician fee charged by their member doctors for microdermabrasion in 2004 was $173.
Does insurance cover microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is typically not covered by insurance when used for cosmetic purposes. Be sure to check with your own insurance carrier regarding the availability or degree of coverage.
Is it possible to get financing for microdermabrasion?
Financing is available for facial plastic surgery procedures. Your plastic surgeon should be able to provide you with further information about financing.
What should I look for in a doctor to perform my microdermabrasion procedure?
To find a qualified plastic surgeon, first, make sure that the surgeon is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgeons (ABPS). This ensures that they've completed the proper training to safely conduct your procedure according ABPS standards. You can visit the ABPS's website at www.plasticsurgery.org to locate a certified plastic surgeon in your area. You should also ask any potential surgeon the following questions:
-
How many microdermabrasion procedures has the surgeon performed?
-
Where and how will the procedure be performed?
-
What are the risks of your particular procedure?
How soon after microdermabrasion are the results apparent?
Some patients will feel and see a difference after one or two treatments. However, multiple sessions are typically required.
Are the results of microdermabrasion permanent?
Periodic repeat treatments are required in order to maintain the results.
