Understanding Cheek Bone Surgery
The best candidates for cheek bone implants are individuals interested in adding height to their cheekbones. Patients should also be physically healthy and realistic in their expectations. Cheek augmentation typically takes between one and two hours to complete and is most often performed with either general anesthesia or a combination of local anesthesia and sedation. The surgery is often performed in an outpatient surgical center or in a surgeon's office-based facility.
Bruising, swelling and numbness can occur after surgery. Pain medication can be prescribed to help control any mild to moderate discomfort. Most of the swelling fades within two weeks, though some specific swelling can remain for a month or longer. Special camouflage makeup can be worn to help disguise bruising. Within five to ten days the stitches will be removed or dissolve on their own. Patients are typically able to return to work within a week, though more strenuous activities will need to be avoided for four to six weeks. Complications that may occur with cheek augmentation include asymmetry, hematoma, hyperpigmentation, implant shifting, infection, numbness, and the need for additional surgery to remove and/or replace the implant.
