Surgery of the Chin
The best candidate for chin implant surgery is a man or woman who is physically health, realistic in their expectations, and interested in improving the shape and balance of the face by reshaping the chin. Chin surgery can take anywhere from thirty minutes to three hours to complete and may be performed in a doctor's office-based facility, a hospital or an outpatient surgery center. Local anesthesia and sedation or general anesthesia is commonly used.
After chin implant surgery, swelling and bruising is common and usually fades within five days. During the first several days, talking, smiling and other facial movements may be difficult. Stitches are usually removed or resorb within two weeks. Most patients find that they can return to work in about a week after surgery, though more strenuous activities should be avoided for two weeks and any activity that can jar or bump the face should be avoided for six weeks or longer. The potential complications that can occur with chin surgery include the following: adverse anesthesia reactions, blood clots, capsular contracture causing unnatural shape, implant shifting or displacement, infection, temporary numbness and/or stiffness, and the need for reoperation.
