Chin Reduction Toronto

Some patients have chins that appear too large
for facial harmony. To reduce the chin, an incision is made in the lower dental gum area inside the mouth and the bone is reduced. There is a fair amount of swelling postoperatively, but most patients look presentable in 10 - 14 days.

Mentoplasty Information

Surgery Of The Chin

The chin is a prominent facial feature which, when well defined, can help to balance the facial features and create a pleasing profile. Nevertheless, the chin is rarely given as much attention as other facial features, the nose or ears for instance, or the skin and the appearance of wrinkles or sagging jowls. But the chin can have a big impact on the overall appearance of the face, with a weak chin or an overly prominent chin greatly detracting from one's appearance. Many plastic surgeons recommend chin surgery be performed along with rhinoplasty, or nose surgery, because they understand that the chin is essential to facial balance and harmony. Chin surgery, or mentoplasty, is a relatively straightforward procedure that can greatly enhance and improve one's appearance.

Chin surgery can result in greater facial harmony and a more balanced and pleasing profile. This can be achieved by building up a receding chin with the insertion of an implant or by moving the bone forward, or by reducing a chin that is too prominent in appearance. As with many cosmetic procedures, patients often experience the added benefit of increased self-confidence.

Submental liposuction can also be used to improve the chin by redefining the chin or neckline through the removal of excess fatty tissue. Surgery of the jaw can also be used to enhance appearance and improve the form and function of the lower face in cases involving dental malocclusions or birth defects in the jaw's structure.

Those considering chin surgery should be in good health and have realistic expectations of what the procedure can achieve for them. During consultation, a good plastic surgeon can discuss your goals and your options through surgery. He or she may also recommend additional procedures that can help you to achieve your goals.

Deciding To Undergo Chin Surgery

Once you've decided to undergo chin surgery, it's essential that you find a qualified and experienced facial plastic surgeon. Your plastic surgeon will meet with your for a consultation, during which time he or she will examine your chin and jaw. Additional procedures, such as rhinoplasty, may be recommended to help you achieve the best facial balance. Factors which can influence the outcome of surgery, such as age and skin type, will be taken into consideration. Your surgeon should discuss the procedure in detail, including the particular technique, the anesthesia, the facility, the associated risks, the costs, and so on.

Understanding The Surgery

For chin augmentation, an incision is typically made beneath the chin or on the inside of the mouth at the junction of the gum and lower lip. The tissue is gently stretched to create a small space or pocket into which an implant is then inserted. Implants come in a great variety of shapes and sizes that can be custom fitted to the patient's face. They are comprised of a synthetic material that feels similar to the natural tissue found in the chin. Once the implant is inserted, the incision is closed using fine sutures, resulting in an imperceptible scar if the incision is made beneath the chin or no visible scarring if made inside of the mouth.

For chin reduction, the incisions are typically made beneath the chin or inside of the mouth. The bone of the chin is sculpted to the desired shape and size. Incisions are made inside of the mouth and the facial bones repositioned if orthognathic surgery is performed. Depending upon the amount of work, the procedure typically take between one to three hours to complete.

After The Surgery

Dressings are typically applied over the chin right after surgery and may remain in place for the first two to three days. Patients typically experience some tenderness and discomfort which can be controlled with medication prescribed by your surgeon. It's also common to feel a tight or stretched sensation, which typically fades within a week. A liquid and soft food diet may be required during the first few days as chewing will likely be limited.

Normal activities can usually be resumed within about ten days after the procedure, though more strenuous activities will need to be avoided for the first few weeks. The majority of swelling will fade within about six weeks.

Chin surgery performed for cosmetic purposes is typically not covered by insurance, though some degree of the procedure may be covered if it is performed to correct or improve a genetic deformity or traumatic injury. Be sure to check with your own insurance carrier regarding the degree and/or availability of coverage.

Facial plastic surgery can greatly enhance your appearance and improve your self-image, while also eliminating the signs of premature aging.
