A chin augmentation, or chin implant surgery begins when a surgical cut is made under the chin or inside the mouth between the gums and inner lip of the lower jaw. A space is created to prepare for a chin implant to be fit into. Chin implants can appear very natural once placed under the skin because the implants come in a wide array of dimensions and shapes and feel very natural to the touch. Once inserted, the chin implant is secured into place and the skin is stitched close. The incision is concealed inside of the mouth or underneath the chin.Chin reduction surgical incisions are made in the same areas as chin augmentation incisions. The chin bone is then altered to refine the look of the lower face. If the patient undergoes orthognathic surgery, the surgical cuts are placed inside the mouth in order to shift the bones in the face. Each patients case is different, but a chin reduction surgery usually require one to three hours to perform.
After The Surgery
When your surgery has been completed, sterile bandages are placed over the chin and you may be instructed to leave them in place for the next two to three days. The chin may be sore but pain will be limited by prescription pain medicine. The skin may either feel as though it has been stretched or pulled taught, and the sensation should no longer be present after a week. Because chewing will probably be limited in the first few days following the chin surgery, meals should consist of liquids and soft foods.
Ten days time should reveal significant signs of improvement after the chin surgery, and everyday activities can be returned to. It will be at least a few weeks until the body can handle strain. Swelling should subside about six weeks post-operatively.
If a chin surgery is the result of a congenital deformity, accident, or injury insurance may cover the cost of the procedure. As a general rule, most insurance companies do not pay for cosmetic surgeries.
