A Better Understanding of Eyelid Surgery
The best candidate for eyelid surgery in Toronto is a man or woman who is physically healthy, realistic in their expectations, and looking to improve the appearance of their eye area. Most patients tend to be thirty-five or older in age, though eyelid surgery may be performed at any age.
Eyelid surgery is most often performed as an outpatient procedure and can take place in a surgeon's office-based facility, an outpatient surgical center, or in a hospital. The procedure typically takes between one and three hours to complete. Local anesthesia combined with sedation is most often used, though general anesthesia is sometimes used. After surgery, an ointment may be used to lubricate the eyes and a bandage may be applied over them. Patients may experience some discomfort, though this can be controlled with pain medication prescribed by your doctor. Patients may also experience a tightness in the eyelids, swelling, bruising, excessive tearing, sensitivity to light, and dryness or burning of the eyes. It's best to keep the head elevated for the first several days, and cold compresses can be applied to the eye area to help reduce swelling and bruising. Swelling and bruising can last anywhere from two weeks to a month. The stitches are typically removed within two to seven days after surgery. Patients can usually return to work within seven to ten days, at which time makeup may be worn to help disguise bruising per your doctor's instructions. Contact lenses can usually be worn after two or more weeks to help with your vision. More strenuous activities and alcohol consumption will need to be avoided for about three weeks.
All surgery carries some degree of risk. The potential complications that can occur with eyelid surgery include the following: asymmetry, bleeding, dry eyes, infection, pulling down of the lower lids, swelling at the corners of the eyelids , temporary blurred or double vision, whiteheads and, very rarely, blindness. |
