Aging produces sagging of the cheeks, jowls, and neck. Patients can wait until the sagging is
significant or start earlier as preventative
maintenance so that sagging does not become
too obvious and the changes are subtle. The skin and the deeper tissues are elevated and pulled back with the excess skin being removed.

This facelift surgery can be divided into 3 sections: the neck, the jaw line, and the cheek mound.

The surgery repositions the deeper structures under the skin to a more youthful position resulting in a rejuvenated appearance. The localized areas of jowl fat can be removed with liposuction or liposhaving. Sometimes thread or feather suspension (suture) suspension techniques are used to add further support of the surgery. Recovery can be as prompt as 2 weeks depending on how extensive the surgery was.

Face lift Surgery Information

The best candidate for a facelift is a man or woman who is physically healthy, realistic in their expectations and looking to improve sagging facial skin, jowls, and/or loose neck skin. Most patients are in their forties to sixties, though facelifts can be performed on those in their seventies and eighties.

Facelift surgery is most often performed as an outpatient procedure and can take place in a surgeon's office-based facility, an outpatient surgical center, or a hospital. It is typically performed with local anesthesia combined with sedation, though some patients receive general anesthesia. The surgery itself usually takes several hours to complete.

After surgery, patients are likely to experience some bruising and swelling and the skin may feel tender, tight and dry. Discomfort is typically mild, though pain medication can be prescribed if needed. Most bruising fades within two to three weeks. Numbness can also occur and this typically fades within a few weeks to a few months. It's best to keep the head elevated during the first few days to help minimize swelling. Drainage tubes, if used, will be removed within a day or two, while bandages are typically removed within one to five days. The stitches are usually removed after about five days. Most patients find that they can return to work within ten to fourteen days, and special camouflage makeup can be worn to help disguise any remaining bruising. More strenuous activities will need to be avoided for two or more weeks, and sun exposure should be limited for several months.

All surgery carries some degree of risk. The potential complications that can occur with facelift surgery include adverse anesthesia reaction, asymmetry, bleeding, excessive scarring, hematoma, infection, nerve injury, and poor healing.
