Understanding Lip Reduction Surgery
The best candidate for lip reduction is a physically healthy man or woman who is realistic in their expectations and looking to reduce their lip size. It's typically recommended that the procedure only be performed on younger patients once their facial features have matured, around the mid to late teens. Lip reduction typically takes between one and two hours to complete and can take place in a surgeon's office-based facility, an outpatient surgical facility, or in a hospital. The type of anesthesia used is usually either local or regional anesthesia, commonly combined with sedation, or general anesthesia or light sleep anesthesia.
Numbness, discomfort and swelling is common after lip reduction surgery and pain medication can be prescribed to help control any discomfort. Swelling typically fades within two to three weeks and bruising is also common. Chewing and speaking may be difficult at first. Stitches are typically removed or dissolve on their own within seven to ten days. Most patients find that they can return to work within five to seven days, though more strenuous activities will need to be avoided for up to three weeks and contact sports should be avoided for six to eight weeks. The potential complications that can occur with lip reduction include adverse anesthesia reaction, asymmetry, hematoma, infection, permanent numbness, scarring, seroma, and dissatisfaction with results.
