Rhinoplasty Toronto (Nose Job)

This is one of the most common operations performed by a facial plastic surgeon. Many patients do not like their noses. Daughters often inherit their fathers noses and want their noses reduced in size or their tip raised so the nose harmoniously and naturally fits their face. Some want their nasal bridge built up and the nasal tip width narrowed. Asians and blacks often want their bridges built up while caucasians often want their bridges made smaller or humps taken off. Rhinoplasty nose surgery is performed by choosing the right surgical steps to give the most satisfactory result to the patient to achieve their cosmetic goals. The recovery period is usually 10-14 days to become socially acceptable.

Rhinoplasty Procedure Explained

Rhinoplasty can achieve several changes, including a reduction or increase in the overall size, the removal of a hump, a change to the shape of the tip or bridge, a narrowing of the span of the nostrils, or a change in the angle between the nose and upper lip. The surgery can also relieve some breathing problems.

The best candidate for rhinoplasty is a man or woman who is physically healthy, realistic in their expectations, and unhappy with the appearance of their nose. Many cosmetic surgeons will not perform rhinoplasty on children or teenagers until they have completed their growth spurt, typically around the age of fifteen for girls and seventeen for boys, as the results achieved through surgery can be damaged by future growth. Rhinoplasty in children can be performed in cases where the nose is crooked and there are some breathing problems. Rhinoplasty in this age tries to get the nose and internal structures as straight as possible without damaging the growth plates of the nose.

Chin position can also be an important consideration in rhinoplasty. When looking at the profile, as you can see from the drawing below, the position of the chin can influence the appearance of the nose on profile. Dr. Ellis can demonstrate changes in chin position during an imaging session during which pictures are taken of your face and changes are made to the shape of your nose and chin using digital imaging software.

Rhinoplasty surgery is typically performed as an outpatient procedure and can take place in a surgeon's office-based facility or in a hospital. Local anesthesia combined with sedation is most often used, though general anesthesia may be used as well. The procedure usually takes between one and two hours to complete, though more complicated procedure may take longer.

There are two basic types of rhinoplasty: open rhinoplasty and closed rhinoplasty. Open rhinoplasty involves an additional small incision made on the underside of the nose between the nostrils, thus resulting in a fine line scar that will fade with time. Most rhinoplasties whether primary or revisional are performed using this open approach.

Immediately after surgery, the nose and head may ache, and the face will likely feel puffy. Pain medication can be prescribed by your surgeon if necessary. However in a study done by Dr. Ellis, 25% of his patients did not take any pain medication after surgery. Bruising around the eyes and swelling is common, most of which fades within two weeks or so. Some oozing of blood in the nostrils may also occur during the first few days, and patients may experience stuffiness for the first few weeks. Some less noticeable swelling can persist for several months. Patients are typically up and about within two days. Nasal packing is not typically used and the cast is removed 3-5 days post operatively when the swelling is subsiding. Almost all patients are able to return to work within two weeks and strenuous activities like exercise can be resumed in two weeks. Patients should avoid allowing their noses to get hit the nose (such as in contact sports) or getting the nose sunburned for eight weeks.

All cosmetic surgery carries some degree of risk. The potential complications that can occur with rhinoplasty include adverse anesthesia reaction, infection, nosebleed, prolonged swelling, dorsal irregularities and the need for additional surgery.
